Overview

The Gender Studies team made an academic paper regarding the possible uses of virtual reality (VR) technology to challenge traditional gender roles by creating different experiences about Queer and LGBTQ+ problems. The study aims at giving users a better understanding of gender diversity and questioning existing prejudices by blending such gender theories as intersectionality, queer theory, and LGBTQ+ rights.

Below is the brief overview of the paper:

Introduction

The study examines the history of inequality between genders and how society has changed its perception on what it means to identify as male or female. This is still evident today where despite some steps towards equality for all people regardless of sexual orientation discrimination against those who are LGBTQ+ continues to be prevalent. The authors suggest that one way these norms could be broken down is through immersive storytelling using VR which puts individuals in situations outside their comfort zones thus challenging them to empathize with others whose lives differ from theirs.
